Iron Clad timber retaining wall project

Honest Timber. Built Right.

Timber retaining walls have been holding back Aussie hillsides for over a century. Done properly — with treated hardwood, galvanised brackets, and proper drainage — they'll easily last 20+ years and look more natural than concrete in a garden setting.

We use treated H4 hardwood and proper galvanised steel hardware. Walls over 1m get engineered and certified. All work is QBCC licensed, fully insured, and backed by our workmanship guarantee.

Timber Retaining Wall Types We Build

Hardwood Sleeper Wall

Treated hardwood sleepers stacked between galvanised steel posts. The classic, strongest, longest-lasting timber option.

Treated Pine Sleeper

Treated pine for budget-friendly garden walls and shorter retention. H4 treated for ground contact.

Round Log Wall

Treated round logs vertical or horizontal for a rustic, natural look. Great for landscaped and acreage settings.

Rail Wall

Horizontal hardwood rails fixed between vertical posts — cleaner finish than sleepers, ideal for shorter decorative walls.

Crib Wall

Interlocking timber framework filled with stone or soil. Ideal for steep banks where you need maximum stability with planting access.

Capped & Finished

Top-capping rails, painted or stained finishes, and integrated step or planter detail. Optional finishing for premium look.

Why Choose Iron Clad for Timber Retaining Walls

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do timber retaining walls last?

A properly built timber retaining wall using H4 treated hardwood and galvanised hardware will easily last 20+ years. Cheaper untreated timber or undersized posts fail much faster.

Timber vs concrete — which should I choose?

Timber looks more natural and costs less up front. Concrete lasts longer (50+ years) and handles bigger loads. For garden walls under 1m, timber wins on price and aesthetics. For structural retention, concrete is usually the call.

Do I need council approval?

In Queensland, retaining walls over 1m typically require council approval and structural engineering. Under 1m usually don't. We handle the paperwork either way.

How much does a timber retaining wall cost?

Pricing depends on height, length, timber choice, and site access. As a rough guide, hardwood sleeper walls run $250–$500 per linear metre installed.

Why do timber retaining walls fail?

Cheap untreated timber, ungalvanised hardware, no drainage behind the wall, or undersized posts. We use the right materials and proper drainage so this doesn't happen.
